    Frozen Watermelon Strawberry Smoothie

I don't often make fruit smoothies for myself because it's an easy way to consume a lot of calories in a short time without realising, but I do like frozen watermelon smoothies and this is so much nicer than plain soda water instead of an extra weekend glass of wine, or two.

Key ingredients in Frozen Watermelon Strawberry Smoothie

    Watermelon

You can buy frozen watermelon chunks for convenience or buy a whole (or half) and freeze it yourself.

    How to cut up watermelon

    • Cut the watermelon in half lengthways
    • Using the dark green stripes as a guide, cut the watermelon into wedges
    • The seeds will be on the outside. Use a teaspoon to scrape them away
    • Cut the watermelon from the shell and chop into chunks. Arrange on a tray and freeze overnight
    • Store in a zip-lock bag in the freezer for up to a month

If you're having an alcohol-free month, like Dry January, cut up a couple of watermelons and freeze them so that you can have smoothies whenever you want. Watermelon doesn't keep much over a month as the flavour starts to go, so don't over-do it!

    Strawberries

Fresh are best, but defrosted, frozen ones will do. Strawberries that are very ripe have a more intense flavour.

    Ring the changes

    Change the fruit

Keep the watermelon and add any other fruit you like instead of strawberries. Raspberries or blueberries are especially good - or mix it up with a combination of berries.

    Make it long and sparkling

For a special non-alcoholic drink for a party or summer lunch, dilute with soda water or sparkling mineral water to make a Sparkling Watermelon Strawberry Smoothie.

    Secrets of Success

No real secrets here, except to serve it quickly so that the smoothie is still cold. If you need to make ahead of time, keep in a very cold fridge.

What else do you need to make frozen fruit smoothies?

To whizz it all up thoroughly, use a food processor, blender, smoothie maker, or a stick blender. If you have a choice, go for the smoothie maker for 1-2 servings (I love my Nutri Ninja) or a food processor for a larger quantity.

    If you like this...

    ...Why don't you try:

A bottle of Strawberry Gin and a glass of Strawberry Gin and Tonic

    Instructions

To prepare and freeze the watermelon yourself:

For a Frozen Watermelon Strawberry Smoothie :

    • Take the watermelon out of the freezer and leave for 5 minutes at room temperature
    • Wash and hull the strawberries.
    • Put the strawberries in the smoothie maker. Add the frozen watermelon chunks. Blitz until smooth
    • Pour into 1 or 2 glasses and serve immediately

For a Sparkling Watermelon Strawberry Smoothie :

    • Add an equal quantity of soda water and either blend or stir.

    Notes

    Everyday Cooks tip:

    • Frozen watermelon quickly loses its flavour, so use within a month.
